Capitol Complex Development
In recent years the Capitol Complex has undergone a number of changes. The information below highlights a few of the bigger projects that have been completed, as well as some that are underway. For an overview of the Capitol Complex, view the map.
Master Plan Update
Planners for the Capitol Complex are in the process of updating the Master Plan, the document that looks ahead and envisions what the state’s central campus for government should look like and how it should function in the future.
New IUB/OCA Building
An energy-efficient building – designed to be a model for other businesses – is being constructed on the southeast corner of the Capitol Complex for the Iowa Utilities Board and the Office of Consumer Advocate (IUB/OCA). The building is expected to open in October 2010.
West Capitol Terrace project
Parking lots west of the State Capitol were removed during the summer of 2006 to make way for a people's park - the West Capitol Terrace - with pedestrian paths, gathering spaces, benches, and native trees and flowers.
Department of Public Safety Building
The old Records and Properties building at the corner of East 7th Street and Court Avenue has been renovated and remodeled to become the new home of the Department of Public Safety. The building celebrated its grand opening on June 8, 2007.
"Looking Back, Looking Forward" video
This presentation was prepared for an October 2006 visioning and brainstorming session to provide a historical look at the Capitol Complex. The video is approximately 20 minutes long.
